Bank Vaults Removed
for More Office Space in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
As the need for more office space continues to grow in Florida,
more renovation projects include concrete cutting. In the
fall of 1998, two banks in Fort Lauderdale that had leased
space in commercial buildings vacated their offices. Left
behind were their large vaults. The building owners were able
to lease both spaces to new tenants but both tenants wanted
to maximize the office floor space. During the design process,
it was decided to remove the bank vaults as they were no longer
needed, and more importantly, they took up quite a lot of
square footage. It became apparent that concrete cutting services
would be required as both tenants were adamant that the removal
process be done at night, absolutely dust-free, and most importantly,
without disturbing them in any way.
Concrete Cutting & Breaking, Inc - Del
Ray Beach, Florida - was contracted to cut and remove the
two bank vaults. Both projects required multiple wall saws
to be run at the same time and CCB was able to equip both
projects. The big difference in the jobs was the removal process.
In one case, the vault was located on the
first floor and in the other case, the vault was located on
the third floor. The first floor vault was cut into 10,000-pound
pieces and removed with two forklifts working simultaneously.
The third floor vault had to be removed by hand and taken
to the ground floor by elevator. This was accomplished by
using a shop-made lifting device to place pieces on pallet
jacks. Once the pieces were taken down the elevator and outside
the building, a Bobcat was used to load the concrete into
a dump truck for disposal.
Both jobs were performed with the customers'
and the owners' of the buildings continuous involvement in
the renovation process. Both customers were extremely happy
given the fact that their workplaces were barely disturbed,
the jobs were completed in a timely manner within budget,
and they were able to get on with their office renovation
projects.
