Syracuse Parking Deck

Parking Structure Removal Project in Syracuse

Concrete Cutting and Breaking, Inc. - Grand Rapids, Michigan - was hired to complete a parking structure renovation project in Syracuse, New York. This project consisted of removing three levels of a parking deck in Syracuse at the MONY Bank location. The structure was determined to be unsafe after a section collapsed and crushed a number of cars below.

Slab sawing was determined to be the safest method of removal since there were working offices below and a glass office building approximately two feet away. The other three sides were closely hemmed in by streets, as is typical in downtown settings of older cities. The structure was cast-in-place concrete with 5/8" rebar in the slabs on 12" centers, and the 30" diameter columns with 1-1/4" rebars on 6" centers, plus five 2 1/2" rebars in each.

Besides the three levels of deck, there was an elevator and staircase to be removed. These had to be cut with a wall saw and removed piece by piece with a crane. Each level had a 3' to 4' parapet wall around the perimeter which was 12" thick. The slab was 10-1/2" to 24" thick, creating a need for a variety of cutting techniques.

Three cranes were staged around the structure so that the lifting of pieces could be continuous. First, the walls were cut into sections with a parapet saw and then they were severed from the deck. Next, the deck was cut one bay at a time and removed via crane. Lastly, the columns were cut off with a curb saw and removed. The work progressed from the outside in to the center, so that the cranes would have room to reach within their boom. CCB had as many as six saws cutting at one time.

The total cutting of this job included:

  • 172 30" diameter columns
  • 156 3' by 12" parapet wall cuts
  • 90 4' by 12" parapet wall cuts
  • 604' of 8" wall sawing
  • 250' of 12" wall sawing
  • 3,048' of 8" slab sawing
  • 24,476' of 10-1/2" slab sawing
  • 3,058' of 15" slab sawing
  • 933' of 18" to 24" slab sawing
